Our blogoversary celebration continues today! What better way to celebrate than with a dessert dip recipe?

You might be wondering why the heck I’m serving a Funfetti Dip, and I get it. But in years past, I’ve made all kinds of goodies featuring sprinkles, including Funfetti Pancakes, Funfetti Sugar Cookie Bars, Funfetti Ice Cream Sandwiches, Sour Cream Funfetti Cupcakes and more…

What is funfetti dip? It’s a nod to a favorite cake of many of our childhoods, and this dip actually tastes like cake mix (without the addition of cake mix, praise be.) Classic Funfetti Cake is a vanilla cake mix studded with rainbow sprinkles, and it was my favorite growing up… and in college, too.

It’s kind of a thing we do here at The Speckled Palate for celebrations, so I figured that making a dip would be a good idea for this month.

    Why I love this recipe:

This homemade Funfetti Dip tastes like cake batter without the addition of actual cake batter. (Yes, I love a lick or two of the batter after I’ve baked a cake, but dip that contains an entire box of cake mix? No, thanks.)

This dessert dip is beautiful in its simplicity. You only need 5 ingredients, and chances are you’ve got them at your house if you’re a baker. (And if you’re not, they’re all quite easy to find at the store or to have delivered directly to you.)

Another thing I love about this dessert recipe is that it’s fun for the family. My daughters are obsessed with sprinkles, and this Funfetti Dip has made them so happy!

In addition to these tools, you’ll need a few ingredients to make confetti dip from scratch:

    • Cream cheese
    • Sweetened condensed milk—this is not the same thing as evaporated milk, so please make sure you’ve got a can of the correct ingredient
    • Rainbow sprinkles—you want to use the cylinder shaped sprinkles, which are sometimes called jimmies. Why? They hold onto their shape and color better than nonpareils (the round ones), which will immediately bleed color into your batter.
    • Vanilla extract
    • Almond extract—this will give the dip some flavors similar to that of a vanilla cake.

    Variations on Funfetti Dip

I love this Funfetti Dip because you can change the colors to whatever you’d like, depending on the time of the year or the occasion.

Since themed sprinkle mixes are sold in stores and online, it’s fun to make twists on this dessert dip and transform it into a holiday-centric dessert.

    • Red, white and blue sprinkles for July 4th
    • Red and green for Christmas
    • Pink and red for Valentine’s Day
    • Orange and black for Halloween
    • Green and gold for St. Patrick’s Day

What can I pair with Funfetti Dip?

    • Graham crackers
    • Animal crackers
    • Vanilla wafer cookies
    • Oreos
    • Crispy pretzels
    • Strawberries
    • Raspberries
    • Apple slices

How do you make Funfetti Dip from scratch?

In a large bowl, combine the cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk. (Make sure it’s not evaporated milk—that’s not the same thing, and if you use it, your dip won’t have a nice sweetness.)

With a hand mixer, beat the ingredients together until creamy and smooth.

Measure in the almond and vanilla extracts, stirring until combined with a rubber spatula.

Lastly, add the sprinkles. Stir until combined, then transfer to the fridge to keep cold or enjoy immediately with your favorite dippers.

How to Choose the Right Sprinkles

There are so many sprinkles on the market out there. We’ve had the best luck with cylindrical-shaped sprinkles, which are also known as jimmies. They hold their shape, and their colors typically don’t run.

Stay away from nonpareils, colored sugar and quins, which are all colorful and fun, but will turn your dip into a murky disaster because their colors run.

    Erin’s Easy Entertaining Tips

Funfetti Dip would make the perfect centerpiece at a birthday party or celebration of any kind.

And the best part about this dip is that it feeds a crowd easily, it’s nice and colorful… and you can customize the colors to your taste!

Here are a few tips and tricks to transforming this dessert dip into a party centerpiece:

    • Make it ahead of time. If you do this, don’t swirl in the sprinkles. Instead, stir them in just before serving to ensure the colors don’t run.
    • Depending on the amount of people you’re serving, you can double this recipe. You can also half it if you’re not feeding a crowd.
    • Make it into a dessert board! Similar to my Valentine’s Day Dessert Board, think of the dippers you can pair with this dip recipe.

What can I make this Funfetti Dip for?

If “just because” isn’t an answer, here are some occasions where this dessert dip recipe would come in handy:

    • A birthday
    • Mother’s Day or Father’s Day if the person being celebrated loves sprinkles
    • The first day of a vacation (or staycation)
    • Any holiday that has fun colors… think of adding red and green jimmies to these Funfetti Pancakes to make Christmas Pancakes; red and pink for Valentine’s Day, red, white and blue for July 4th, etc.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does this homemade Dunkaroos dip last?

You can make it 1-2 days in advance, but it’s best right after making. Why? Your sprinkles might run in color and bleed into the dip, which isn’t the end of the world, but makes for the dip to be a swirled color situation instead of a creamy white dip with pops of color from the sprinkles.

What do you dip in Funfetti dip?

Whatever you’d like! My family is partial to graham crackers, hard pretzels and fresh fruit, but you do you! Animal crackers, vanilla wafers and Oreos would be fun, too.

What is Dunkaroo dip made of?

The dip paired with Dunkaroos is a vanilla icing dip. It tastes similar to this dip. The main difference? This one has more of a cake flavor and it’s got sprinkles, too.

What is the difference between Funfetti and vanilla cake?

Funfetti is vanilla cake with sprinkles inside of it.

Quick tips and tricks to the best homemade Dunkaroos dip

    • Store in the fridge for 1-2 days, covered in plastic wrap or in an airtight food container. The sprinkles might bleed the longer it sits, giving it a swirly look, but that’s OK.
    • Let it warm up for a few minutes if you’re storing it in the fridge. The consistency will change when it’s cold, and we want this goodness to be dippable.
    • Use the right sprinkles. Rainbow jimmies are my favorite for funfetti recipes because they tend to hold their shape and color. Nonpareils and colored sugar sprinkles will seep color into your dip.
