Blueberry Salad Dressing Recipe

Salads are for summer (and warm weather) because summer produce is the bee’s knees.

This dressing is perfect for your summer salads because it calls for fresh blueberries. (Is it not summer where you are? You can use frozen blueberries that have been defrosted in a pinch!)

This perfectly-balanced, vibrantly-colored blueberry dressing is full of delightful blueberry flavor. Apple cider vinegar adds a nice acidity along with fresh squeezed lemon juice.

It’s so refreshing and great on all kinds of green salads.

Why I love this recipe:

Honestly, sweet blueberries are the best this time of year, and I figured that sharing this little recipe in celebration of blueberry season would be a good idea.

I love any salad recipes that involve fresh fruit, especially fresh berries, and this salad dressing just helps them sing when everything is mixed together.

Here are some things I dig about this recipe:

    • Fresh and flavorful, this dressing uses bright and punchy blueberries for delicious flavor and stunning color.
    • You can make it with fresh or frozen blueberries, so you can use it all year long.
    • It’s a balanced vinaigrette that will enhance all kinds of salads, but especially this homemade Blueberry Salad that features spinach, feta cheese and chicken. It’s a lunchtime favorite in our household.

No matter what you decide to drizzle this Blueberry Dressing on, it’s a great way to add both color and flavor to any salad you might make.

    • Berry bowl or colander, for washing berries
    • Spoon, for serving
    • Bottle or jar, for storing

    Let’s talk ingredients!

In addition to the tools above, you’re going to need some ingredients to make this recipe, too! Chances are, you might already have some of them in your fridge or pantry. Scroll down to the recipe card for the full measurements and instructions.

Here are the handful of ingredients that you’ll need:

    • Extra virgin olive oil — you can also use any neutral-tasting oil, like avocado oil, canola oil or vegetable oil.
    • Apple cider vinegar — white wine vinegar or white balsamic vinegar would also work well here.
    • Lemon juice — use freshly squeezed if you can! It has the best flavor. Lime juice would also be great here.
    • Honey — you can also use simple syrup or agave nectar if you need a plant-based option.
    • Blueberries — fresh is best, but defrosted frozen berries will work, too. Make sure they’re closer to room temperature.
    • Salt & pepper — to taste, of course! But trust me, you will need a little of both.

    Customizations and substitutions

Vegan dressing: Use agave nectar, maple syrup or simple syrup if you don’t want to use honey.

Lighter dressing: This dressing is already pretty light. Use less honey and a lighter oil such as avocado oil if you want yours to be even lighter. I have not tried this, though.

How to make Blueberry Salad Dressing

Making a homemade dressing is so much easier than you’d think!

    Here’s what to do:

Get out the blender or food processor, and measure in the olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, honey and blueberries.

Give it a good blend. This might take a little bit. You want them to be really smooth!

If you don’t want the texture of the blueberry seeds and pulp, you can strain it through a fine-mesh strainer.

Then, stir in the salt and pepper to taste, then pour over your favorite salads.

    How to store

Homemade salad dressings should be stored in a food-safe, airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and used within 1-2 weeks.

Use a tightly sealed container or mason jar to prevent exposure to air, which can cause the dressing to spoil more quickly. If the dressing settles, you can shake it up or re-blend it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can I use frozen blueberries?

Absolutely! Just let them thaw first. Then you can use them just like you would fresh ones in this recipe.

What should I do if the dressing separates?

Some dressings may separate over time. Before using the dressing, give it a good shake or stir to mix the ingredients thoroughly, or even throw it in the blender again. This will help blend everything back together.
