This recipe finishes out my somewhat deep dive into easy pretzel recipes. So far, I have made ranch pretzels, as well as toffee pretzels and cinnamon sugar pretzels. I love them all for obvious reasons.

These ones feel special because, y’all know I love Cajun spices, and these pretzels have a bit of a kick, which is a nice addition to the other flavor profiles we’ve already got.

This recipe would be a great addition to a gumbo party, a Mardi Gras party or your tailgate spread. Just be forewarned: these have a nice kick, and they probably won’t last long.

Why I love this recipe:

I took inspiration from a classic Savory Party Mix, which calls for more than just a combination of butter and Cajun seasoning… and I introduced Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and some other seasonings into the mixture to give some complexity to these pretzels.

The result is delightful. The pretzels are bursting with flavor and have a nice kick without being overwhelmingly hot. That said, this is not for everyone, but if you like a little bit of spice with your snack, I think you’ll going to love this.

A few more things to love include:

    • They bring the FLAVOR. As I said above, they’ve got some spice and a nice kick. This recipe was developed for somebody who enjoys a salty, spicy snack, and not for someone who prefers a milder or sweeter one.
    • Ready quick. All you need are 45 minutes to bake and 15 minutes to cool before enjoying. That’s it.
    • Store ‘em easy. They should last for more than a week if stored in a sealed bag with the air pushed out. My family took this as a dare to see if we could eat them faster… and we did.

Whether you make these for an afternoon snack (or a road trip snack!) or as something to share at a gathering, this recipe is an easy win that tastes like it required way more effort than it actually did.

    Let’s talk ingredients!

In addition to the tools above, you’re going to need some ingredients to make this recipe, too! Chances are, you might already have some of them in your fridge or pantry. Scroll down to the recipe card for the full measurements and instructions.

Here is what you need to get at the store to make this recipe:

    • Pretzel twists — use a bag of your favorite crunchy pretzels! I chose the twists, but different shapes should work similarly.
    • Unsalted butter — I like to use unsalted butter here to ensure the pretzels don’t get too salty. (After all, the Cajun seasoning and pretzels both have salt added.) I do not recommend replacing it with an oil, like canola oil or vegetable oil.
    • Worcestershire sauce — this adds beautiful umami flavors to the mixture that goes on top of the pretzels. There is no easy substitute, though there are Worcestershire sauces that are gluten-free and vegan if that is something that concerns you.
    • Tabasco sauce — or your favorite hot sauce. You want to use something that has a nice vinegary kick that you enjoy, because you will taste it a bit here.
    • Cajun seasoning blend — you can use a store-bought blend or a homemade blend of your own choosing. A lot of Cajun seasoning blends are super salty, so we like to use a lower-salt Cajun seasoning when we can.
    • Garlic powder — this adds some bonus garlic flavor. We use this instead of fresh minced garlic because that will burn and give our pretzels a bitter aftertaste.
    • Onion powder — much like the garlic powder, this gives us some bonus onion flavor, which I personally love.

How to make Cajun Spice Pretzels:

Prepare. Pour the pretzel twists into a large mixing bowl. Preheat the oven. Line a sheet pan with parchment or a baking mat, and set aside.

Make the sauce. Melt the butter in a saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat. Measure in the Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, Cajun seasoning mix, garlic powder and onion powder. Stir to combine and let it boil for a moment.

Mix. Pour the sauce mixture over the pretzels. Use a rubber spatula to gently toss everything together until coated.

Bake. Pour the coated pretzels onto the prepared sheet pan, and bake for 30 minutes total. You WILL need to open the oven and gently stir with a heat-safe spoon or spatula every 10 minutes to ensure all parts of the pretzels bake and do not burn. Keep an eye on them because they can and will burn!

Cool. When the pretzels have baked for the allotted time and no longer appear wet, remove from the oven, and let cool completely. This will take 20-45 minutes.

    Serve and enjoy!

    how to store:

Once the pretzels have cooled, transfer them to a gallon-sized plastic bag. Push any extra air out of the bag and seal tightly. They will keep for more than a week if stored properly. You can also store them in an airtight container.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different flavor of seasoning mix?

Sure, but it needs to be about the same size as the seasoning mix listed in the recipe card below.

Can I use a homemade Cajun seasoning instead of a store-bought blend?

Sure! We always keep a lower-salt Cajun seasoning blend in our household. because we find that most commercially made blends are pretty salty. If you want to make your own Cajun seasoning mix, feel free.

What kind of pretzels work best for this?

Any bagged crunchy pretzels. I used the pretzel twists but I bet the rods or squares would work just fine here.

Do I have to stir them while they bake?

You do and that is part of the instructions. It’s a pain, but a necessary step. If you don’t stir the pretzels occasionally as they bake, you run the risk of them burning.

Why did my pretzels taste bitter?

If they’re bitter, you overbaked them.

    Can I double the batch?

You sure can, but you will need two large rimmed baking sheets to make it happen because you will not be able to fit two batches of this onto one sheet pan. It’s important not to overcrowd the pan, and one bag is pushing the limits of what what a regular-sized baking sheet can do.

Do these need to be refrigerated?

No these do not need to be refrigerated. As long as they are completely cooled before you store them, you can store them in a cool dry place in your kitchen or pantry and break into them whenever the mood strikes.

Quick tips and tricks to this Cajun pretzels recipe:

Don’t rush them… or turn up the heat to make them cook faster. You don’t want to burn the pretzels, so give them the time listed and be sure to stir every 10 minutes.

Make them early: Bake them on a day when you have an hour to spare. After all, you’ll need to be close to the oven to give the baking pretzels a stir. Follow the instructions for storing so they’ll keep until you are ready to enjoy them.

    When to share…

    • GAME DAY: Set out a bowl during an at-home tailgate and watch them disappear.
    • HOLIDAY GATHERINGS: Make a batch ahead of time and have this snack ready to go as soon as guests arrive.
    • PARTIES: Low effort, high reward. Treat them like you would the holiday gathering above.
    • TRAVEL SNACKS: Sealed in a bag, these travel well and beat gas station snacks.
    • EDIBLE GIFTS: Package them in a cellophane bag or tin for a crowd-pleasing treat!
