It’s light, flavorful, and feels fancy, but it doesn’t require any fuss, which, quite frankly, is one of my favorite ways to make a recipe. You don’t even need a cocktail shaker.

All you’re going to do is: Muddle berries with some fresh mint leaves, pour in some simple syrup for a little extra sweetness and top it off with ginger ale.

And you’re done! Serve it ice cold with fresh mint leaves and some bonus blackberries, and you are good to go!

    Let’s talk ingredients!

In addition to the tools above, you’re going to need some ingredients to make this recipe, too! Chances are, you might already have some of them in your fridge or pantry. Scroll down to the recipe card for the full measurements and instructions.

Here is what you need to purchase from the store:

    • Fresh mint — I like to harvest these from my patio herb garden, but you can get packets at the store or at the farmers market if you don’t grow your own. This is particularly abundant in the summer time and pretty easy to find in the produce section of any store.
    • Blackberries — while I’m sure you could use frozen blackberries that have been defrosted, I really like using fresh in this recipe because it’s summertime. Make sure they’re washed really well before you muddle them.
    • Simple syrup — you can purchase this at the store, or you can make your own. (It’s easier than you would think! I wrote a whole tutorial for you here: How to Make Simple Syrup.) I do not recommend using honey or agave in place of the simple syrup because they will not blend as well. You could, however, use honey simple syrup if you prefer those earthy flavors.
    • Ginger ale — use your favorite brand. This adds some ginger kick and some serious bubbles to our spritz, which make it effervescent and even more satisfying.

How to make this Blackberry Spritzer

Muddle. In a tall glass, add the mint leaves and the blackberries. Use a muddler to muddle them together until nice and mashed up. You can use the back of a wooden spoon if you don’t have a muddler.

Sweeten it up. Pour in the simple syrup and give it a good stir to combine before you add ice to cool it all down.

Top with ginger ale. And then garnish with additional mint leaves (or a sprig of mint) and blackberries. Serve immediately, and enjoy!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes. You can muddle the blackberries and mint together and add the simple syrup to those before storing in the refrigerator, these will keep for a few hours. Do not add the ginger ale until right before serving so that it stays crisp and bubbly.

Can I use frozen blackberries instead of fresh?

Yes, frozen blackberries work great. You will want to defrost the ones that you plan to muddle so that you can actually muddle them and get their juices mixing with the fresh mint. You can certainly use frozen blackberries as a garnish for this to chill the drink down on a hot day.

What if I don’t have ginger ale?

You could use club soda here. However, you’ll lose that ginger flavor, but it’ll still be refreshing. You could probably swap this with a lemon-lime soda, as well. I do not recommend using a sparkling water or a tonic water because you won’t get any additional flavor from those.

If I’m making the simple syrup, can I make it ahead of time?

Yes, this is actually the way to do it. Make a big batch of the simple syrup and store it in a jar in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. It saves time when you’re making multiple drinks.

Can I add alcohol to this recipe?

I haven’t tried this, but I’m sure you can. A splash of vodka, rum, gin or Prosecco would pair beautifully.

    How long does this keep?

This drink is not made to keep. You need to enjoy it immediately for the best experience. The leftovers will become flat and the berries will soften, so it’s not an ideal candidate to keep.

    Can I use different berries?

Sure. Raspberries, strawberries or blueberries would all work wonderfully here. Mix and match if you want, and let me know what you thought.

Quick tips and tricks to the best spritzer mocktail

    • Make the syrup ahead of time and keep it chilled in the fridge. This way, you can mix one of these whenever… or make a batch to share!
    • Start with clean berries and mint. This feels like a silly thing to write, but it is really important that everything has been scrubbed clean and patted dry before you add it to a drink.
    • Chill the glasses. Pop the glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes before you serve this drink. Not only will the drink stay colder for longer, but it feels a little fancy!
    • Speaking of fancy, use frozen blackberries in place of ice cubes. They will add gorgeous color to your drink and also add some bonus flavor. Plus, they just look really pretty.
    • Make it scalable. This recipe is easy to multiply, so you can double or triple it for a crowd.
