Grapefruit is such a tasty winter citrus, but it’s not a flavor I’ve always appreciated. Additionally, it’s not something I knew what to do with for a majority of my life. Before this sangria, my grapefruit preference was to simply peel the fruit and devour it immediately.

Let’s be real: There’s NOTHING wrong with that. But since the folks at Sprouts Farmers Market asked me to elevate the humble grapefruit in a cocktail, I had to figure out another way to utilize grapefruit in my kitchen.

Turns out, grapefruit juice and slices are really delicious in sangria.

And since it’s the heart of grapefruit season, I was able to pick up several pounds of the citrus without breaking the bank.

This Sparkling Grapefruit Sangria features a bevy of winter citrus and stars the pink grapefruit. The pink grapefruit juice serves as the base. Pour in some sauvignon blanc (or another crisp, dry white wine of your choosing)

Blood oranges and Meyer lemons make an appearance, too. (If you cannot find these beauts on your grocery shelves, naval oranges and regular lemons will do in a pinch.)

Mix ‘em all up, chill for several hours, then it’s time to serve.

Measure the sangria into the glasses, then top with Sprouts Sparkling Lemonade for some sparkle and sweetness.

    • 750 ml. sauvignon blanc
    • 4 oz. simple syrup you can add more or less, depending on the sweetness of the grapefruits

    Instructions

    Make the Sangria

    • Using a juicer (handheld or electric), juice the grapefruit.
    • Strain the grapefruit juice using a fine mesh strainer, then transfer to a pitcher.
    • Pour the sauvignon blanc into the grapefruit juice.
    • Add the simple syrup.
    • Place the sliced fruit in the sangria, stir until combined and refrigerate for at least 10 hours.

Pour individual glasses of Sparkling Grapefruit Sangria

    • In a white wine glass, measure in 6 oz. of the sangria.
    • Top the sangria with 3 oz. of Sprouts Farmers Market Sparkling Lemonade.
    • Garnish with a thin grapefruit slice, and serve cold.

    Notes

Chilling time is necessary, as the fruit will infuse in the sangria and give it a more powerful citrus flavor.
You can substitute regular grapefruit for the pink grapefruit. You may also substitute naval oranges and regular lemons for the blood oranges and Meyer lemons if you cannot find these in stores.
You can substitute another dry white wine for the sauvignon blanc. Choose one that’s not too oaky or sweet, as it could potentially overpower the light flavors of the grapefruit.
