    Let’s talk ingredients!

In addition to the tools above, you’re going to need some ingredients to make this recipe, too! Chances are, you might already have some of them in your fridge or pantry. Scroll down to the recipe card for the full measurements and instructions.

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    • Canned green beans—I’ve found these make this crispy green bean recipe easier because we don’t have to do anything to the beans before coating them! I think this would be more complicated with fresh green beans.
    • Eggs—these serve as a binder and help the topping stick to the green beans. There is no substitute.
    • Milk—this goes in with the eggs. You can use whatever you have in your fridge.
    • Panko bread crumbs—while you could use another breadcrumb, I love panko because they are so crunchy when they bake up!
    • Parmesan—get the kind you can grate yourself, not the shelf-stable bottle. This adds a nice cheesy, salty flavor to the crispy green beans.
    • Black pepper—this is our seasoning for the breading!
    • Cream of Mushroom Soup—grab your favorite can! This is the base for our mushroom dipping sauce.
    • Chicken broth—this is the second required ingredient for the dipping sauce. It helps thin it out. If you’re looking to make this green bean appetizer a vegetarian one, swap it with veggie broth.

How to make Crispy Green Beans

The most arduous part of this recipe is the prep. It’s also a little messy. You may use forks and spoons to help with the egg wash, as well as use a spider strainer to remove the beans from the breading.

These are essentially baked green bean fries.

Preheat the oven. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set aside.

Drain the green beans in a colander. Set aside.

Crack the eggs into a large bowl. Break the yolks with a fork, and pour in the milk.

Measure the panko breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese into another large bowl. Season with black pepper and stir. Set aside.

Drop a handful of the green beans into the egg wash. Coat, then transfer to the breading.

Toss the green beans in the breading, using gentle hands.

Transfer the green beans back to the egg wash for a second wash.

Transfer back to the breading mixture, tossing gently to bread them well.

Place on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer. We want to give them space to crisp up.

Work in batches until all the green beans have been breaded and placed on the sheet pan.

Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the breading has browned and crisped up.

Serve hot with the mushroom gravy!

    Make the Mushroom Gravy

While the crispy green beans bake, pour the Cream of Mushroom Soup and the chicken broth into a saucepan over medium-high heat.

Cook until the mixture bubbles, whisking occasionally.

    Serve hot with the beans!

Quick tips and tricks to the best green bean appetizer:

    • Serve it hot. This is best enjoyed warm, so cook it right before you plan to serve it!
    • How to store: If you have leftovers, store in an airtight food storage container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat in the oven to crisp up the exterior. Store the dipping sauce separately in the fridge.

Now who’s salivating over these Crunchy Green Bean Casserole Bites and their Mushroom Gravy?

    Instructions

    Prepare the Crispy Green Beans

    • Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set aside.
    • Drain the can of green beans in a colander. (They do not need to be rinsed.) Set aside.
    • Crack the eggs into a large bowl with high sides. Break the yolks with a fork, and stir in the milk. Set aside.
    • In another large bowl, measure out the panko breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese. Season with the black pepper and stir. Set aside.
    • Take a handful of the green beans and place them in the egg wash. Coat, then transfer them to the breading.
    • When coated, carefully transfer them back into the egg wash. Coat the green beans again, then transfer to the breading mixture.
    • When the green beans have been dipped and breaded twice, place them on the prepared baking sheet.
    • Work in batches, coating the green beans in the egg wash before they go into the breading. Do this twice with each batch, and place on the prepared baking sheet.
    • When all the green beans have been breaded, transfer the baking sheet into the preheated oven.
    • Bake the green beans for 20 minutes, or until the breading begins to brown and crisp up.
    • Remove the green beans from the oven, and store in a warm place until ready to serve. (They’re best served hot, so while the Crispy Green Beans bake, make the gravy!)

    Make the Mushroom Gravy

    • In a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat, pour in the Cream of Mushroom Soup and the Chicken broth.
    • Whisk occasionally while heating, cooking until the mixture is bubbling and combined.
    • Serve immediately with the warm Crispy Green Beans!
