We are watching and cheering for the runners competing in the Boston Marathon and marveling at their strength.

Once upon a time, I ran a marathon, and whenever I think about running, my mind goes to runner food.

And how I began every race day of mine with a huge glass of water and a bowl of plain oatmeal.

    Let’s talk ingredients!

In addition to the tools above, you’re going to need some ingredients to make this recipe, too! Chances are, you might already have some of them in your fridge or pantry. Scroll down to the recipe card for the full measurements and instructions.

    Here’s what you need:

    • Rolled oats — these are the best. We purchase these extra thick rolled oats * (affiliate link) from Bob’s Red Mill, and they don’t get soggy so quickly. Old fashioned oats work, as well. I do not recommend using steel cut oats or instant oatmeal.
    • Milk — I have used both cow’s milk and non-dairy milk in these overnight oats without yogurt, and they’re both delicious. I recommend using an unsweetened non-dairy milk if you’re going that route.
    • Strawberries — fresh or frozen work here!

Additional toppings and additions to consider:

    • Fresh chopped strawberries
    • Bananas
    • Chocolate chips — for the chocolate lover because strawberries and chocolate together are delightful
    • Nut butter, like peanut butter or almond butter
    • Maple syrup — if you want your overnight oats to be on the sweeter side. Be sure to taste strawberries before you mix the ingredients because they might be sweet enough on their own!

How to make overnight oats without yogurt

In a blender, combine the milk and strawberries and blend until smooth. If you want to add a sweetener like pure maple syrup, now is the time to add a drizzle!

Measure the oats into a bowl, and pour the strawberry/milk combination over top of the oats. Stir together with a rubber spatula, and then transfer to your mason jars.

Place the lids on the mason jars, and refrigerate overnight. Enjoy warm or cold the next morning, topped with your favorite toppings!

A note on variations and substitutions of this Strawberry Overnight Oats recipe

    • This recipe can be made with cow’s milk or a non-dairy milk. Be sure to choose an unsweetened non-dairy milk if you go that route, as the strawberries add enough sweetness by themselves!
    • If it’s not strawberry season, consider adding 1-2 teaspoons of pure maple syrup to the milk/strawberry mixture in the blender to add a little extra sweetness.
    • If you’re feeling decadent, add toasted shredded coconut, toasted nuts or nut butter, or even a few dark chocolate chips to your overnight oats in the morning. You can add chopped strawberries or any other fruit you have on hand, too!

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you soak the overnight oats?

Overnight is best, but you only really need 2-4 hours for the liquid mixture to really soak into the oats.

    Are overnight oats healthy?

Overnight oats are packed with protein and fiber!

Can you add fruit to overnight oats?

Yes, you can. We blend up strawberries with milk to create the liquid base for this overnight oat recipe, but you can add more when serving them. You could also substitute the strawberries for blueberries, blackberries or even raspberries to give these oats a different flair.

What do you store overnight oats in?

I use glass mason jars for my mason jars. In the morning, I’ll eat the straight out of the jar. If I’m feeding my children, I will pour the oats into a bowl and add whatever toppings the girls want to them.

Can I eat overnight oats after 1 hour?

Yes, you can. Chances are, the oats will be a little crunchy, but that’s OK if you don’t mind it.

What type of oats should I use in this recipe?

Rolled oats are the best. Old fashioned oats work, as well. I do not recommend using steel cut oats or instant oatmeal.

How long do these oats last in the refrigerator?

So long as you’re not using instant oats, they’ll last 3-4 days easily. We’ve stretched ours to last all week, too, by using extra thick rolled oats.

      1. Hi Ana, the oats soak in all the liquid overnight while hanging out in the fridge, so they don’t need to be cooked. I’ve made this recipe with quick cook oats, and they become entirely too mushy, which is why I enjoy using old fashioned (or thick rolled) oats for overnight oats.
