What We Drank: Velvet (New Orleans)

What We Drank: Velvet, New Orleans. // The Speckled Palate

Back in October, I visited the Big Easy not once, but twice… for two separate wedding weekends.

Needless to say, I had a fabulous time both trips, and I had the pleasure of walking Magazine Street with my friends Karen and Ben before meeting the bride, a dear friend, to officially kick off the wedding festivities the second weekend.

We ended up stumbling into Velvet to grab some much-needed coffee, and I fell in love with the little shop as I sipped my iced latte.

Homemade poptarts? And cupcakes for breakfast? I could totally get behind this!

How can you not love an espresso bar this cute? C’mon, y’all.

Have you and your friends stumbled upon a hidden gem like this one?

If you’ve been to New Orleans or live there, have you been to Velvet?

I adore little places like that! There used to be a coffee house (for lack of a better word, because it was in an actual house) near my college called “The Witches Brew”. I wonder if its still there… the drinks were amazing!

You and me both, girl. And I love that the coffeehouse was called “The Witches Brew.” How fun! Sadly, there was no place like that within walking distance from my school, but I cherish finding gems like that today.

We did! After Karen came and picked me up at the airport early, we hung out and walked Magazine, dropping in to Velvet to grab some much-needed coffee since I’d been awake since, uh, 4 a.m. The coffeehouse was fabulous and oh-so-cute!

I would love to go to New Orleans one day! Those homemade pop tarts look dangerous, I bet they taste as good as they look,

I totally support you visiting the Big Easy. It is one of my FAVORITE cities of all time, and I’m not surprisingly super sad that we no longer live within a 45 minute drive. And I really wish I had eaten one of those poptarts. I blame that fail on the fact that I was up at 4:30 a.m. to catch my flight to NOLA.

This place sounds lovely! There’s always something whimsical and homey about places like these. I’ve stumbled across a little cafe before, tucked in between offices and such, when I was in college. When I felt like I needed something special, I’d go over for some coffee and a little square of shepherd’s pie. How I miss that place.

Isn’t it fun how we stumble upon, and then save these places for special moments? I need to find one in my current city. And I think you should, too. :) The cafe you described in your college town sounds lovely.

Yes, I would go back to Nola just to try this. Well and other things too but I definitely have to get there next time.
