Sunday Snippets: The FNL Edition

It’s the weekend, y’all, and I hope you’ve been enjoying it as much as we have.

It’s been a busy one, that’s for sure, but busy is good. We spent Friday evening on a patio with friends, drinking beers and catching up. We got up early to attend a 5K on Saturday, then Winston headed out to the LSU Spring Game while I went to work. We met up in the middle with friends to watch the Final Four. (And can I just say that I am so not happy that Kentucky is moving on? Because I’m not. Boo hiss, Coach Cal.)

And now today? We’re finally relaxing and preparing ourselves for the coming week, which includes some cleaning and cooking. Nothing too terribly exciting, but sometimes, it’s nice to spend a weekend day at home after going, going, going all week and weekend. Ya know?

So, with that said, here are my weekly snippets for y’all.

  1. I ran my first 5K since I was maybe 10 on Saturday. (So, basically, this was my first 5K in 17 YEARS. Goodness.)
  2. It was a lot of fun, though I am now remembering why I don’t like to run during the summer when the sun is up. … It was HOT out there, and I definitely drank a beer after the race because I deserved it.
  3. Yes, I run in pigtails. Yes, they are awesome.
  4. This was my first race to run a total sub-10 minute/mile pace throughout. And I felt pretty darn good after considering the heat.

  5. Winston and I started watching Friday Night Lights last Sunday night. So far, we’re one season in, and we are showing no signs of stopping until we finish all 76 episodes.
  6. While we are jumping on the bandwagon a little late, late is better than never. Right? (Just agree with me, please.)
  7. I now understand what my friends were talking about when they mentioned Tim Riggins’ hair.
  8. However, they did not mention other random Tim Riggins facts, like Tim Riggins: Babysitter; Tim Riggins: Handyman; Tim Riggins: Schoolyard-Bully-Turned-(Semi)-Nice-Guy. Winston and I have laughed about all of these and wonder what else Tim Riggins can do. I suppose we will see in these coming seasons, huh?
  9. Winston likes to point out any unrealistic events that happen during the football games depicted on the show.
  10. I like to point out that the long-sleeved tech tees the guys are wearing during the first few games seem a little… unrealistic. C’mon, folks. This is the South! It doesn’t get cold here until at least November… if we’re lucky.

    1. I watched FNL a couple of years ago and finally convinced Joe to rewatch it with me. He obviously loved it. As for my favorites, the characters in the first two seasons are my favorite, but the story lines in the last two seasons are so, so good. The show is just perfect and Texas is practically a character on its own. I ended up writing a paper on Tami Taylor last year, after convincing the prof that a show about football did indeed qualify for our “Women in Television” class.

      1. I love that you got Joe into the show, too. (I basically told Winston we were going to be watching it, and that it had been recommended by many friends. There have been no complaints, other than him sometimes pointing out unrealistic events during football games.)

And I cannot wait to get more into this to learn what you’re saying – about the characters, about Texas and the storylines. I cannot wait, really. And can I just say that you’re freaking awesome for writing a paper on Tami Taylor? Winston and I both love her so much!

    2. I have to admit that I started watching FNL because I was seeing you and Melissa and Jill (do you know Jill?) tweet about it, and I was looking for something new on Netflix. (After 5 seasons of 24, I couldn’t power through to watch the last two. I needed a change.) I had heard good things, and I love football… so it seemed like a no brainer. I had no idea that every episode was going to have me both laughing and crying! I can’t believe I missed this on tv. I JUST finished season one last night… it took me a week, haha. I have been staying up way too late watching it every night. I just love how Kyle Chandler manages to play the character in a way that he seems manly but also sensitive… that he can give tough love but also be a softie. And that sometimes his little mannerisms and bickering with his family can be SO funny and so true to real life! I’m officially obsessed.

      1. I love that you started watching FNL because you heard us talking about it! I feel the same way about it — laughing and crying in every episode — and I, too, love the Coach. (And Mrs. Coach.)

Glad I’m not the only newbie to be obsessed! We just finished the first season, too, and I’m excited to discuss this more as we get farther into the series!

    3. Congrats on your 5K! Your weekend sounds lovely. I haven’t watched Friday Night Lights, I’ve heard a lot about it though. I really should check it out.

      1. Thanks so much, Mandy! I appreciate it! My weekend was truly lovely, and I hope this next one can be just as wonderful. And I definitely recommend FNL. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it, and I think you would enjoy it, too!

      1. Thanks, Jess! We’re about to start Season 2 – after a day break – and I simply cannot wait to see what happens next. I’ll be sure to let you know what we’re thinking!
